MEASURED O.G.:1.059 (way low, could have been my high pre-boil volume)
Pre-boil volume: 14.5-ish (had about 2 gals extra in bottom of kettle after collecting 11 gals, so measurements for run-off seem to have been 2 gals too high; boil vol and target vol adjusted in recipe accordingly, my O.G. represents 71% efficiency when using 12.5 gals as final kettle volume and assuming about 1.5 gph boil-off)
RUNOFF (how did I end up with an extra 1.5 to 2 gallons?):
- Mash: 9.25 gals, Sparge: 8.0 gals
- post brew day: decreased Grain Absorption value from 0.15 gals/lb to 0.1 gals/lb (resulted in measured pre-boil volume of 14.5)
- thus, USE 0.1 gals/lb ABSORPTION VALUE WITH ORANGE COOLER
FERMENT:
- 48 hr. starter (2nd gen. Nottingham slurry in 1200 mL of starter wort made from .7 lbs 2-row in 10 quarts of filtered water)
- ferment took off very vigorously within first 8-ish hours of pitching (blew off airlock)
TASTING OUT OF CARBOY: oxidized, finished too sweet (1.019), finishes very bitter but without much hop flavor. (is yeast to blame? Fermentation seemed good, but attenuation was low). Mash was 148F, so it should have been a very fermentable wort... |
